PUBLICATIONS

The bibliography on this site is meant to serve as a general, interdisciplinary reference list to scholarship on or relevant to martyrologies and ecclesiastical calendars up to the early modern period.  More general hagiographical studies are not included here, except where they are concerned with these sources or closely related aspects such as feast days, saint’s cults and martyrdom. For practical reasons more than anything, its scope is currently mostly limited to Western Europe. The bibliography has not been subdivided by discipline, geographical area or period as there are other bibliographies available that meet those demands. In addition to the IMB, I especially recommend the following:
◊  The Online Resources page of the Société des Bollandistes, which provides information about their own databases as well as links to other associations and online resources.
◊  Christine Rauer’s Annotated Bibliography to the Old English Martyrology, which encompasses guides to hagiographical studies, dating, language and source studies as well as other helpful study aids.
◊  The Hagiography Society’s Bibliography.

This bibliography is still very much a work in progress and will be updated regularly. Please feel free to contribute items for inclusion by email or through the contact form.
